After
graduation from Girard Rural High School I worked in farming around the
neighborhood. One of the neighbors was a superintendent at Hull and
Dillon Packing Company, and since winter was coming he encouraged me to go
to work there. I was a skilled laborer for 3 years then a production
foreman for 6 years. A veterinary invited me to take a civil service
exam to become a food inspector. I did, and in 1972 I moved to
Emporia, KS to begin my new career. In 1984 I accepted a promotion
at Nebraska City, NE. I accepted another promotion in 1986 in
Topeka, KS.
In 1995, my wife, Elaine, and I moved to 80 acres north of Emporia. I retired 1/3/2006 and am working part time at Bluestem farm and Ranch Supply in Emporia Ks. I work 1 week and am off 1 week, so far this is OK. It gives me time to fish and golf and go on trips. Elaine commutes to Emporia where she is the Director for Student Financial Aid at Emporia State University and is not ready to retire at this point. We have three children: Dena, Shawn, and Brandy. Dena Wilkins lives in Raleigh, NC. She and her husband Brian own their own business, Chimney and Window Wizard. Dena works for the State of North Carolina, Parks and Recreation Jordan Lake and they have three children, Mason-18, Austin-14 and Quinton-12. Shawn Henrie, died in 1996 at the age of 26. He is ever in our hearts. Brandy Bitler of Topeka Kansas is a Branch manager for Knoll Medical Supply a division of Apria Home Health and has one son, Bryson-5.
